Kayaking Koh Tao Safety Tips
- Always let somebody know that you are going out kayaking Koh Tao, the direction you plan to go and an estimated time you will return. Informing staff at your resort and where you rent the kayak from is highly recommended. Always wear a life jacket, even if you are a strong swimmer.
- Seek qualified instruction to learn proper paddling techniques and water safety if you have never kayaked before. Don’t venture too far away from the main island and beware of any off shore winds that could make it difficult to return to shore.
- Don’t snorkel at deserted beaches if you’re on your own. If you get in to trouble, nobody will be there to help you. If you do get into trouble in the water and there are people around, stay calm. Signal for help, by holding up one arm and waving, float and wait for assistance. If you choose to snorkel, make sure you keep a hold of your kayak or secure it safely on dry land.
- Don’t kayak under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Use a high level sunscreen, wear a hat and t-shirt.
- Never dive or jump into the water from the kayak as there maybe rocks just under the surface that you cannot see. If snorkelling, do not stand, kick or touch the coral under any circumstances. You will damage and kill it, plus it could also cut or sting you.
- Learn how to spot a rip tide and keep clear of it when snorkelling or kayaking Koh Tao. Basically a rip tide can be recognised by sand coloured or rippled water running out to sea when the water on either side is generally cleaner. The waves may also be larger and breaking further out to sea on both sides of the rip. Check the latest weather forecast before kayaking on Koh Tao.
So what are you waiting for? Grab a paddle and get ready to explore Koh Tao from a whole new perspective. Kayaking Koh Tao is the perfect way to experience the island’s natural beauty and make memories that will last a lifetime.
